G M Moore & Associates Awarded Contract for Flood-safe House Design
Hailsham based architectural designers, G M Moore & Associates, are celebrating after being awarded the contract to design an innovative new house for a flood plain site.
The site, in the Low Weald of Sussex, is liable to flooding once every thirty years, meaning Glenn and his team have had to think ‘out of the box’ when it comes to finding new ways to build a safe and environmentally sustainable home. Glenn’s ingenious answer has been to raise the property one metre above ground level using a steel frame supported by a central column. To outside observers the house will appear to ‘float’ above the landscape. This ‘trick of the eye’ is not just a gimmick, however, it will afford the property greater protection against the flood waters that occasionally inundate this land.
The house itself will be a two-floor Modernist house built along eco-friendly lines with a green roof which will also provide space for solar panels and photo-voltaic cells. The design will also include a mechanical heat recovery and ventilation system and a ground source heat pump. The structure will mainly be timber frame with a target u-value of 0.012.
Commenting on the project, Glenn said: “This is a challenging project with many factors to consider but what we are designing is not only effective at dealing with the flood land position, but also innovative, exciting and practical. This will be a lovely home to live in, whether there is flood water or not.”
Glenn has over 30 years of experience designing properties in this region, with extensive knowledge of modern environmentally sustainable building techniques. In addition, he has worked on numerous listed building projects, helping people achieve the perfect balance between preservation and modern living standards.
